First chiropractic adjustment
1895 — On September 18, D. D. Palmer performs the first-ever chiropractic adjustment on Harvey Lillard, a deaf janitor, in Davenport, Iowa.

Palmer describes the incident in his 1910 The Science, Art and Philosophy of Chiropractic: The Chiropractor’s Adjuster:

“Harvey Lillard, a janitor in the Ryan Block, where I had my office, had been so deaf for 17 years that he could not hear the racket of a wagon on the street or the ticking of a watch. I made inquiry as to the cause of his deafness and was informed that when he was exerting himself in a cramped, stooping position, he felt something give in his back and immediately became deaf. An examination showed a vertebra racked from its normal position. I reasoned that if that vertebra was replaced, the man’s hearing should be restored. With this object in view, a half-hour’s talk persuaded Mr. Lillard to allow me to replace it. I racked it into position by using the spinous process as a lever and soon the man could hear as before. There was nothing “accidental” about this, as it was accomplished with an object in view, and the result expected was obtained. There was nothing crude about this adjustment; it was specific, so much so that no Chiropractor has equaled it.”

Other versions of this story have been documented by Willard Carver, a chiropractor and D. D. Palmer’s attorney, and Bobby Westbrooks, who interviewed Lillard’s daughter Valdeenia Simons.

an inside job… Chiropractic Care Helps The Innate Wisdom

0

Over the past few months, I have had some very near and dear interactions with the “western medical” health community.  First, my puppy, Soli, was struck with a bout of the very deadly parvovirus in puppies in which medical intervention was necessary to save her life.  She is doing great now, back to her puppy self, and chewing on anything she can get her teeth on.  Later that month a close chiropractic colleague had pregnancy complications in which an emergency C-section was performed to ensure the mother and child got through with no further complications.  They are both at home, healthy, and enjoying this thing we call LIFE.  Lastly, my grandmother, who I am extremely close with, had a very large medical procedure to repair an abdominal aortic aneurysm.  She is still recovering, and making slow gains to get back home and regain her daily schedule.

All of these events have made me look very closely at what I do, and how forever thankful for what emergency medicine does.  There is, however, a distinct difference in what we do, and also what our ultimate goal is.

The traditional medical community is amazing at emergency situations.  They are well trained in saving lives and dealing with crisis situations.  In their bag of tools, they utilize drugs, to change body physiology in a crisis mode, or in worse case scenario, surgery to remove masses, abnormalities, or saving a life from infection or preventing something from going systemic.  They first identify the condition with a diagnosis and then treat it.

The chiropractic community takes a holistic/vitalistic approach at restoring LIFE to your body by changing physiology in your nervous system and reducing stress in that system.

This Innate Life Force that we were born with is able to function optimally without stress or interference in our nervous system, thus allowing the body to grow, heal, adapt and perform the best way it knows how.

I’m not saying one is better than the other, but rather illustrating how our approach and methods are different, with a different GOAL in mind.  Granted, both disciplines are looking to improve quality of life of the folks that walk into their office.

The problem comes when we equate our HEALTH to our SYMPTOMS, and this is where chiropractic and traditional medicine are vastly different.  Symptoms are our body’s amazing warning sign that something is going on in our system and needs to change.  Let me give you a few examples of why symptoms are NOT a good way to evaluate our health.  Let’s say that I go out and eat some bad sushi with my friends.  Later that night, I may experience vomiting or diarrhea in attempt to rid the bacteria from my body.  Is that smart of my body? Does the vomiting and diarrhea mean I am unhealthy?  Now, another example may be someone who has absolutely no symptoms and is walking around one day and drops dead from a heart attack.  Was this person healthy?

If you have watched the television lately, you may see that there is a medicine for every kind of condition out there—if your legs are restless, if you sneeze, if you’re anxious, if you can’t sleep, if you cant get an erection, if you’re in pain, if you’re skin itches… I’m sure you could think of many more, but the bottom line is that all of these are treating symptoms.

My question is why are you having these symptoms?  What in your lifestyle is causing you to have symptoms?  I’ve said this before, but I still haven’t found a pill on the market that will make you HEALTHIER or give you HEALTH.

Before I continue, we should probably define HEALTH, as described by the World Health Organization: Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

So where does HEALTH come from?  As I understand it, true health comes from within; from the Innate Intelligence that created us.  Every choice that we make brings us closer to or further away from health.  It’s a lifestyle; taking care of ourselves while we are experiencing symptoms, and taking care of ourselves when we are not experiencing symptoms.

Many people look at chiropractic and say, “I’ve been lucky enough throughout my life that I haven’t needed to see a chiropractor,” or, “My back doesn’t hurt, so why would I need to go to a chiropractor?”  As I have touched on in previous blog entries, you do NOT need to have symptoms or a diagnosis to see a chiropractor.  I simply assess the function of the spine and nervous system (the master control system of the body) to give the greatest chance for mental impulses exiting the brain and communicating with each and every cell in the body, thus allowing one’s physiology to function properly and LIFE to be turned ON.  Who doesn’t want that?  Wouldn’t you want that for your child?

Ultimately, I am not trying to do the work of a medical doctor.  I have a deep gratitude for how they handle emergency situations.  Trust me, if I were to break my arm, I am not going to rush to my chiropractor.  I’m going to need some heavy pain killers and my arm fixed by a medical doctor.

My personal chiropractic vision is to increase the consciousness of my community.  Through education and balancing of the nervous system, I have an intense desire to facilitate the recognition of the Innate source within each persons healing.

I had been to multiple Doctors for irritable bowel issues and was recommended medication.  Under Dr. Gentile’s care and treatment I have made more progress with him than all other doctors combined. I have made a marvelous recovery under the use of more natural methods and feel great!  It’s a wonderful feeling to be off all the medications and their unpredictable side effects. I have total confidence in the benefits of chiropractic and appreciate the “non hurried” approach I find in Dr. Tate’s practice.

I was involved in a rear-end auto accident and was experiencing headaches and lower back pain. The M.D. suggested chiropractic would be able to treat my injuries. Since my visits with Dr. Gentile, the frequency of my headaches has been sgnificantly reduced and my lower back pain is nearly gone. I believe that regular chiropractic visits are key to long term health, especially for those of us in our late 40’s.

Dr. Tate and his staff were patient with me. He gave me certain exercises that really helped. He referred me to Breanna, the massage therapist who was wonderful. Tate and Breanna were always supportive and got me back to where I could function almost normally. I have also noticed I have been sleeping better and have more energy. Through this process I have realized that I would benefit from regular adjustments.

Before seeing Dr. Tate, I was diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovary disease) by four different doctors and was told I would not be able to have kids.  They recommended birth control medication to help regulate my cycle, this did not help.  I originally came in to see Dr. Tate for upper back pain.  As I continue with my regular visits, not only is my back feeling better, but for the first time in my life I am experiencing a regular menstruation cycle.  I am free of medications and feeling the way I should.  This all gives me hope for my future.

Subluxation Chiropractic Adjustment

Our bodies are simply amazing!  As two cells come together they carry the miraculous potential of creating LIFE.  Much like an apple seed has the potential to create an apple seedling, developing into a tree, and produce fruit.  How do these atoms, cells, and molecules know what to do, when to do it, in what amount, and at what time to fulfill its potential??

The common factor to potentiate LIFE is this thing we call Innate Intelligence (II).  Innate Intelligence is our own individual expression of Universal Intelligence (UI).  Universal Intelligence is described as that which coordinates all processes in perfect harmony and order; that intelligence which maintains the universe in organization; everywhere, all knowing in every single particle of matter.  Some may call this God, Allah, Buddah, Divine, etc.  Regardless of the name, we all have our unique expression within us called Innate.

Innate has several properties which are constant and never changing much like we experience gravity:  Survival, Adaptation, Replication, Reproduction, and Healing.  These are all very important properties that distinguish us as living beings.  If you were to breakdown our bodies into its chemical compounds you would find that we are made up of several molecules, no different than if you were to breakdown the molecules of a tree.  Imagine a piece of steak.  If you take a knife and slice into it, would it heal over time?  If you punched it would it go through the inflammatory process and bruise?

Your Innate Intelligence is how LIFE is expressed through you, facilitating those very properties of survival, adaptation, replication, reproduction, and healing.

There are many people who have studied countless years of their life, went to the most prestigious universities, and have incredible credentials behind their name.  You could take the education of all these top doctors, lawyers, and scholars and it wouldn’t compare to the inborn intelligence your body was made with.  With the technology and education today, we still haven’t been able to replicate a single cell of the body.  By the time you read this blog, your body will have performed billions of processes without you even knowing it!

Chiropractic was built on a philosophy over 100 years ago to allow Innate to be expressed through you to its optimal potential.  As a chiropractor, I simply locate and analyze interference in your nervous system and remove it with a force.  This interference, described in a previous blog , called a subluxation.  The subluxation is example Innate’s survival mechanism in dealing with stress: physical, chemical, or mental/emotional.

Being the master control system of our body, our Nervous System, (brain, spinal cord, nerves) is the pathway in which our Innate Intelligence travels.  The subluxation often times is asymptomatic, meaning that we don’t know if we have it or not.  The subluxation complex literally impedes mental impulses from our brain separating Universal Intelligence from Innate Intelligence.

We all know the main components to living a healthy life:  eating well, exercise, positive thoughts, and restful sleep. One component we forget about, or never understood was the health of our nervous system.  Having your spine checked regularly will maximize you and your family’s LIFE experience by living to your optimal Innate expression; from Above-Down-Inside-Out.
